Vendakka Paal Curry

Vendakka paal curry is a mildly spiced, delicious Kerala dish prepared by cooking okra with coconut milk and spices. It is a quick and easy curry that goes well with rice, roti or appam.


  • 20 okra, washed and cut into 2 inch pieces
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup thick coconut milk
  • 2 cups thin coconut milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon chilli powder (or as per taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 3 green chillies, vertically slit
  • 1 piece ginger, inch long, sliced
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons coconut oil

For tempering

  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 2 shallots, round sliced
  • 1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1 teaspoon oil


  1. Oil fry okra until slightly wilted. Keep aside.
  2. Add and fry sliced onions, ginger and green chillies until translucent.
  3. Add curry leaves, okra, turmeric powder and chilli powder and sauté.
  4. Add thin coconut milk and salt. Cover the pan and cook for 4-5 mins.
  5. Add lemon juice and thick coconut milk. Stir well and stop flame.
  6. Prepare a tempering with mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds, shallots, curry leaves and pour it over the curry.
  7. Serve vendakka paal curry warm with rice, roti or appam.
