Kada Chakka Achar

Kada chakka achar is an easy and tasty Kerala style instant pickle prepared with bread fruit. It is a great accompaniment to rice.


  • 2 cups Kada chakka / bread fruit, finely chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons Chilli powder
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon Methi seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon Asafoetida powder
  • 5 Green chillies, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1/4 cup Gingelly oil
  • 1 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon Methi seeds
  • 2 Red chillies


  1. Dry roast methi seeds and grind to fine powder. Keep aside.
  2. Marinate chopped kada chakka with salt for 30 minutes.
  3. Heat oil and fry mustard seeds, methi seeds, red chilli, asafetida powder, marinated kada chakka and chilli powder. Cook until kada chakka becomes tender.
  4. Add mustard powder, methi seed powder and crushed green chillies. Mix well.
  5. Serve Kada chakka achar with chappatis, rice or dosa.
