Thakkali Rasam

Kerala style spicy and tangy tomato soup

Ingredients

  • 3 large Tomato
  • 5 Shallots
  • 1/4 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon Coriander seeds
  • 5 Garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon Peppercorns
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons Tamarind paste
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tablespoon Coriander leaves
  • 1 tablespoon Coconut oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 2 Dry red chilly
  • 2 sprig Curry leaves
  • 2 -3 pinches Asafetida

Instructions

  1. Coarsely grind shallots, cumin seeds, coriander seeds, garlic and peppercorns.
  2. Boil tomatoes, water and tamarind paste.
  3. Add the coarsely ground ingredients, spice powders and salt.
  4. Switch off the flame and add coriander leaves.
  5. Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds.
  6. Add red chilly and curry leaves. Sauté for few seconds and add asafetida.
  7. Pour this seasoning over the rasam.
  8. Serve Thakkali rasam hot with rice.
