Awran Jo Murrabo

Awran Jo Murrabo is a very popular dish amongst Sindhis. Healthy and nutritious gooseberries are cooked in a sweet sugar syrup until the syrup is golden honey like. It is a powerhouse of nutrients and is a great accompaniment to any meal.

Ingredients

  • 15 Indian gooseberries / amla
  • 1 teaspoon Alum
  • 2 liters Water, for cooking amla
  • 1 liter Water, for sugar syrup
  • 2 Bay leaves
  • 5 Black peppercorns
  • 4 Green Cardamom
  • 2 small pinches Saffron, soaked in 2 tsp of water

Instructions

  1. Dissolve Alum in water and soak the berries for 12 hours.
  2. Drain, rinse well and prick each gooseberry with a fork.
  3. Boil gooseberries in water for 8-10 minutes. Drain and keep aside.
  4. Make sugar syrup by heating sugar with water, bay leaves, cardamom and peppercorns
  5. Add drained gooseberries and cook for around 20-25 minutes.
  6. Add saffron soaked in water, cook for a minute or so.
  7. Allow the conserve to cool and store it in a sterilized jar.
  8. Enjoy Awran Jo Murrabo for breakfast or with any meal.
