Karkadaka Puzhukku

Karkadaka puzhukku is a traditional Kerala dish prepared during the monsoon season. It is a spicy medley of root vegetables like yam, taro root and tapioca.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Yam, cubed
  • 1/2 cup Taro, cubed
  • 1/2 cup Taro stem, cubed
  • 1/4 cup Tapioca, cubed
  • 1 Raw Plantain, cubed
  • 8 Shallots, finely chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Chilli powder
  • 3 Green chilli
  • 2 Dried red chilli
  • Few Curry leaves
  • 2 tablespoons Coconut oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

  1. Pressure cook vegetables with salt, turmeric,chilli powder and little water for 2 whistles.
  2. Heat coconut oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds.
  3. Add dried red chilli, shallots, green chillies and curry leaves. Sauté well.
  4. Add cooked vegetables and mix well. Cook for a few minutes.
  5. Serve Karkadaka Kanji hot with kanji (rice porridge) and pappad.
