Kadugorai / Kadug ogare is a quick and easy to make Iyengar special spicy rice dish made with mustard seeds and tamarind. It is prepared as an offering to God on the month of margazhi.


  • 1 cup Raw rice, cooked
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Ghee
  • 1 tablespoon Gingelly oil

For paste

  • 2 teaspoons Mustard seeds
  • 4 Dry red chillies
  • Lemon sized Tamarind, soaked in warm water
  • 1/4 cup Grated coconut
  • 1/4 teaspoon Asafetida
  • 1/8 teaspoon Turmeric powder

For tempering

  • 1/8 teaspoon Mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Urad dhal
  • 1/2 teaspoon Channa dal
  • 1 teaspoon Groundnuts
  • 1/4 teaspoon Asafetida
  • 2 sprigs Curry leaves


  1. Grind all the paste ingredients with little water to a paste.
  2. In a kadai, heat oil and fry temper ingredients till they turn slightbrown. Keep aside.
  3. In the same kadai, heat oil and roast ground paste.
  4. Add cooked rice, ghee, required salt and mix well.
  5. Add the tempering to the rice and mix gently.
  6. Serve Kadugorai with fried papads or appalam.
