Varan bhat

A simple dal rice recipe in Marathi style

Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice
  • 1/2 cup tur dal
  • 2 teaspoons Oil
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds
  • 1 pinch Asafetida or hing
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • Salt - to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Jaggery

Instructions

  1. Pressure cook dal and rice seperately. Blend dal.
  2. Temper dal with fried cumin seeds and hot oil.
  3. Adjust taste and consistency with salt, jaggery and water.
  4. Serve varan with hot bhaat (cooked rice)
